Our father was admitted to Johns Hopkins with a significant cranial hematoma and MDS. He was not conscious, and his condition quickly degraded to end of life care. Trent Cunningham was the nurse assigned to Dad and he initially struck us as very professional, knowledgeable, and exceptionally attentive.
What quickly became apparent, and what was ultimately so remarkable and special about Trent was the very tender humanity and the selfless dignity in his care for Dad. He spoke to Dad as if he were a dear uncle and he cared for him with a loving touch that seemed as if he had always known him.
It was so hard to watch Dad slip away from us, so difficult to absorb and accept the end of his time with us, but what a comfort to have had Trent caring for our father and making all of us feel as comfortable as possible through it all. It was truly remarkable and so greatly appreciated.
We mentioned and thanked Trent in our father's obituary and we also wanted to honor Mr. Cunningham for his outstanding care of our father with this DAISY Award.
