And that's what set him apart from every other provider that week: he was timely for scheduled medications, blood draws, and for random call lights. I never felt judged, but rather felt empowered and supported in my care journey with Trent as my nurse.
Trent was the most compassionate and kind care provider I encountered in my 5 day stay at IU West. I had the pleasure of having him as my overnight nurse for 3 nights, and he was consistently going above and beyond for not just me but every person he interacted with. One night he was particularly busy, and I overheard someone ask him a question in the hallway about how busy he was. He responded with a tone that sounded like he was smiling - and he said, "We're good. It was a rough start tonight, but everyone is taken care of, and all is good!" He was so positive in a situation that many people would have been overwhelmed and stressed. At one point, I pressed my call button to request medication, and the tech responded via the call system and said she would let the nurse know. A few moments later, Trent came in and said, "You all right? I saw your call light on." He didn't need to be paged by the tech-he was attentive and highly responsive.
One day during my stay, my IV had to be replaced and no one could find a good vein and vascular support had to come in. That night, Trent had to draw some labs but couldn't get blood from my IV. He took his time to find the right vein and educate me along the way about the process for drawing blood and finding different veins. He was gentle and accurate in placing the needle for the blood draw and said, "I don't want to hurt you, but I think this is our best option," before deciding to use my wrist. He did an excellent job, and the pain was minimal.
On the last night he was my nurse, when he came in to initially check on my day's progress, he was so engaged and it was apparent that he genuinely cared about my progress and the wellbeing of every patient he encountered. He asked specific questions about my progress that day and reassured me that if I needed anything, he was right there. And that's what set him apart from every other provider that week: he was timely for scheduled medications, blood draws, and for random call lights. I never felt judged, but rather felt empowered and supported in my care journey with Trent as my nurse.
Knowing he would be my nurse each night made me feel safe in what was otherwise a very scary situation. I cannot speak highly enough of him. His kindness, genuine passion for quality care, friendliness with all people, and focus on educating patients to empower them in their recovery is exemplary, and he deserves to be recognized for that. It was the scariest week of my life to be hospitalized while pregnant and to face so many decisions that could impact not only myself, but also my unborn child - and Trent was the shining light for me in the darkness of that week. He needs to know how spectacular he is!
