I awoke in the wee hours of the morning very disoriented, thinking I was in my own bedroom, and needing to go to the bathroom. I was surrounded by a tangle of tubes, IVlines, and wires to which I was attached, plus a face mask I didn't know how to release. My frustration mounted and I was forced to give in to my body's need and urinated all over myself and the floor. Val was able to ease my embarrassment, clean and redress me, and get me back to bed ready to sleep largely because of her soothing and reassuring manner. At 4:00, I once again woke up needing to relieve myself. This time I knew where I was, but as I tried, unsuccessfully, to detach the IV pole from the bases and tubes of the oxygen and the BiPAP, I surrendered to the inevitable and peed on the floor. Val answered my signal for help immediately, once again taking care of both physical and emotional clean-up. She began an unrelatedconversation with me, which helped me relax. Then she sat with me as I got to release my emotional flood as I talked about the recent loss of my mother and the emptiness I feel with her gone. Val has a big shoulder, and she is a shining example of what a nurse should be. Nurses take care of the emotional and psychological needs of their patients. Their patients quickly develop a sense of trust in the sincerity of their caregiver, and a feeling of their importance as individuals.
