I have always found Valerie to be a highly effective and intelligent L&D nurse who never hesitates to take care of the sickest and most challenging pregnant patients.
Mental illness is a very complex and often tragic medical complication, especially during pregnancy. Being prepared to assess and pinpoint the various types of mental illness can sometimes be difficult and challenging for the medical staff. A schizophrenic pregnant patient carrying twins was found naked in the streets and had a life-threatening condition of rhabdomyolysis. The initial nursing reaction was the question of why she was on L&D continuing with some degree of resistance to her care plan.

After 24 hours of resuscitation, her medical condition improved. Unfortunately, having been admitted for over 48 hours, she remained un-bathed and completely soiled. Valerie took over the morning L&D shift, assuming this patient's care. She was eager to learn about the condition and to be a part of the team making her better. I have always found Valerie to be a highly effective and intelligent L&D nurse who never hesitates to take care of the sickest and most challenging pregnant patients. She has always demonstrated the deepest compassion and empathy.

This particular patient was weak and in tears due to her physical state. I walked into the room to find Valerie sitting on her bed washing her hands and fingernails while listening patiently to the patient’s schizophrenic delusions. Not only was this the finest nursing care but the level of kindness she demonstrated to this severely mentally ill patient marks a beautiful level of humanity that is sometimes overlooked. This type of care is beyond meritorious and is in fact a key component found within the moral code of a Samaritan.

We should all be so humbled by a display such as this. While learning and growing in our field of medicine, we should always pay heed to the basic needs of humanity. The patients are truly blessed to have Valerie’s care for them and we are blessed to have her a part of our team. I truly feel that Valerie possesses all the qualities that the DAISY Award recognizes in truly exceptional nurses.

Note: This is Valerie's 2nd DAISY Award!
