Wendy showed personal courage and the willingness to go the extra mile for a patient who arrived at the ER with an exacerbation of her mental illness. Wendy made a personal connection with the patient, listening to her needs and addressing them in a new way that empowered the patient to be proactive in her mental health care. Wendy strongly advocated for her patient, enlisting the rest of the nursing staff to follow her lead. The result was the patient being able to verbalize her needs and staff was able to work with her to meet those needs. In the past, this patient would often exhibit behavior that would require restraints, medications or both to ensure her safety. During this visit, the patient was offered the opportunity to work with the staff for a more humane outcome. I am proud to work on the ER team with such a compassionate and courageous nurse as Wendy Lane.
