I came into the ICU via the emergency room and have never stayed in a hospital for even a night. I've typically only had female nurses, so I wasn't sure what to expect from a male nurse. Not only did Will show compassion by adjusting my bed, helping me settle down mentally and physically, but he also showed incredible empathy by not making me feel bad for why I was there (alcohol detox). Will's professionalism and communication skills were excellent. While having a very friendly personality and a tremendous bedside manner, he also knew how to tell me straight about how serious my situation was/is.
At one point I "freaked out" and tried to leave the hospital. He helped talk me down and I eventually finished my detox. During my time in the ICU, I coded and had to be shocked and then Will performed CPR on me. After I was alert, he took the time to talk to me after his shift was done to tell me how incredibly lucky I was. The staff was all surprised that I coded. Thankfully, Will and the rest of the staff were able to resuscitate me.
While in the ICU, Will took care of getting my meals ordered for me. My options were limited, but he made suggestions on what the best broth was; however, he brought me all 3 flavors so I could judge for myself. I think this exemplifies going above and beyond and paying close attention to my needs. He knew I was getting very hungry and thirsty and he made sure to take care of it when I was medically cleared. He talked to me like a person, not an alcoholic. We laughed about movie quotes that we each saw. And on his last day after finishing his couple days of shifts, he made a point of telling me that I better not be there when he returns on Friday. I was released on Thursday. Will is a very good nurse and I feel lucky to have had him care for me.
