Our daughter was just 12 months old when she was diagnosed with ALL at St. Jude in August of 2004. My husband and I were devastated to say the least and nothing anyone said or did seemed to ease our pain. I remember crying for an entire day. I think we quickly got a reputation for being extremely emotional to the point that most nurses were afraid to enter our room. That is everyone but Martha May. She bounced in to our room the second day we arrived and it changed mine and my husband's outlook on what seemed like a black hole. She gave us the very thing that St. Jude stands for, HOPE! From that day forward we anticipated her arrival because we knew that she would bring with her the truth, but behind it would be a smiling face and hope that she along with our doctor were going to do everything possible to heal our baby. There was never a time when she was not available for whatever we needed. There were many tearful days during our three years of treatment at St. Jude and Martha May was there not only as our nurse but as our friend. The day we met her was one of the greatest blessings God has given my family. She is an angel God sent to St. Jude to bring children and their families hope. Our daughter has been off treatment for almost two years now and we can say without hesitation that one of the things we miss the most is seeing her. We are blessed to have met her and she remains our hero and our friend.
