This week we had a 10 year old boy transferred as a direct admit to 6A. He was in a MVC 2 days prior to admission, had his femur fx repaired at Conemaugh in Johnstown, and then was transferred here for treatment of his tib-fib fx. He was taken urgently to the OR by ortho for fascitomities for compartment syndrome and received an external fixator. His anxiety level was very high and hard to distinguish from his pain, which was likely significant. I found him the morning after admission around 8:15 AM in radiology with his night nurse, Staci May. Staci was working very hard with the patient, his mother, and 3 radiology techs to obtain adequate cervical spine films. Staci was so very good and patient with him and his mother. We all agreed it was worth the effort to keep trying as they were imaging him in his own bed (Staci's idea) and we didn’t think he would tolerate transfer to the CT table. Eventually we got the best films we thought possible and were able to have them reviewed in real time so that we could send this boy back upstairs with his imaging complete and his cervical collar removed. I imagine Staci must have been quite tired after more than 13 hours of work. I admire her commitment to this patient who was obviously traumatized and distrustful of his environment and caretakers. She clearly was committed to seeing him through his road trip to radiology- she could have deferred to the day shift, but instead went above and beyond to utilize the relationship she had built with the patient and his mother overnight to ensure that he received the best possible care. I believe that Staci is highly deserving of the DAISY Award, and that this example exemplifies her ongoing extraordinary commitment to her patients.
