Brody brings calm to our unit amongst all its chaos. He is a sounding board for patients and always puts them in the center of the care delivered. He shows great compassion and teamwork regularly balancing charge, preceptor, and staff on our unit. Most recently we had a patient with substance misuse disorder. She had a severely infected valve and had to have her antibiotics switched out many times extending her stay an additional few weeks. She was often caught smoking in her bathroom and having family smuggle her cigarettes in with her personal belongings and food drop-offs. Brody started each day fresh with the patient meeting her where she was. The patient was feeling extremely anxious and wanting to leave against medical advice while awaiting a bed at CMC for valve replacement. Brody assessed the ability for the patient to use the unit based iPad for communication with her mom and her children. She had not felt the sun on her face in more than 30 days. He took the time out of a busy assignment to find out what would help the patient stay and get her much needed antibiotic treatment. The patient said she just wanted to breathe fresh air and feel the sun on her face. Brody got permission to take the patient out to the patio and for a walk around the campus. The patient joked she couldn't run away because her valve was so bad and the nurse joked he didn't want to have to run far because of his asthma. They sat under a tree, walked around the building, and this nurse deeply connected with this patient as a human. He made her experience more positive and though she left AMA a few short days later he kept her here just a bit longer so she could be better.
