Recently we had a 25-year-old patient on the unit that had been in a motor vehicle accident. She, her husband, and their daughter were traveling through our area. Their car broke down and then was struck by another vehicle. The impact killed the daughter. The mother required care. The husband was able to spend time at the patient's bedside. This time was spent on the telephone making funeral plans for their child.
Jamie took care of the patient for several days. They became close during this time. The patient's injuries caused swelling and she was not able to wear her wedding ring. This caused even more stress for the grieving mother. Jamie removed her own silicone wedding ring and gave it to the patient. This simple act gave a sense of comfort. Anyone that knows Jamie knows that she is a devoted wife and values the sacrament of marriage. This makes the gesture even greater, knowing what that ring symbolized to her. Jamie's heart and spirit are beautiful, kind and nurturing. She truly exemplifies the CHRISTUS mission statement.
