Katherine was taking care of a patient who had brain surgery, was confused, and had severe expressive aphasia. His discharge had been planned twice; however, a bed at the skilled nursing facility was unavailable. The patient became very frustrated and agitated. Katherine tried to console the patient, but he remained upset.
Katherine decided during her lunch break she would take the patient outside with her in a wheelchair since he hadn't been outside since his admission and had such a rough day. The patient was so excited to go outside with her and had the best time. The patient was exhausted the remainder of the day and was finally able to get some rest. He talked about his time outside for the remainder of the shift.
Katherine went out of her way to make this patient feel special! She is a wonderful nurse and she consistently goes above and beyond for her patients.
