Amber Mackay was recently promoted to LVN III Lead in the Pediatric Urgent Care clinic. She has taken such amazing initiative in this role and has taken the initiative to meet with the nursing staff in a group and 1:1 to garner feedback and talk about her intentions and her style. She has continually pushed herself into the role of leader as she engages staff and reaches out to them to offer her help or coach them on nursing situations that could have gone better.
As an example, there are two urgent care nurses that are challenged and continue to work on their people skills to improve service and teamwork. Amber took the initiative to speak to them individually to build a relationship and has also coached them individually on their patient service style and their team interaction. She continues to show courage in the initiative she shows to build her team.
Amber is committed to her patients as she teaches and trains others in the nurses' capacity to critically think about next steps and partner with the physicians in executing the plan of care. She is an exceptional preceptor who is full of nursing knowledge. The physicians enjoy working with her because she always makes sure that she is on top of the lab results, x-rays and whatever else the patients' needs so that they can complete their visits in a timely manner.
Amber has purposefully come out of her shell and has taken accountability for the success of our clinic. One day the RNs were in a meeting during the transition between day clinic and evening clinic. The RNs came out of the meeting during a chaotic time in the clinic - Amber was quick to call out where she needed each of them to cover patients and problems so that the clinic could be restored to order.
Amber pushes herself to be the best support for our clinic - even if that means doing the uncomfortable things - like giving feedback or delegating up in a crisis. She comes into my office and has presented a problem that she thought she could have done better, coached herself, given me her plan of action - than thanked me for listening. She is an exceptional nurse and our patients, our physicians, and our organization are very fortunate to have her on our team.
