Most impressive about Terri is her ability to relate to so many individuals with compassion and interest. She always takes the time to actively listen and can show kindness and empathy in the most difficult of situations. We often see people at their worst and sometimes this can be very challenging for leadership and staff. She takes these situations in stride by engaging the patient and or family and takes on ownership of their concern. I have seen her laugh and cry with families who struggle with their sick loved ones. She checks on them regularly, even calling them after discharge to check in.
Terri is a role model for every associate that she comes in contact with. She represents nursing as a profession and upholds the values and mission of Methodist. An associate recently told me that she was the reason that they are pursuing an advanced degree.
The atmosphere of the floor she manages is one of quiet competence. Terri expects only the best of her staff and is quick to disarm a difficult situation. Her management staff is well trained under her. They are competent and fair.
Most recently, the granddaughter of a dying patient requested to be married at his bedside. The weekend PCC started making phone calls to make this happen. Unfortunately, other areas were reluctant to see this to completion. Terri came in unexpectedly and was told of the family's wishes and the roadblocks the staff had encountered. She quickly went to work and the details were hammered out and the wedding took place. The family was very appreciative of the effort she made. In fact she never mentioned that she was involved in the event, only stating that the PCC put everything together. And that is who she is; Terri Himelrick.
Note: This is Terri's second DAISY Award!
