"My most favorite thing about direct patient care is spending time with the patients, teaching and assisting them and their family members with the skills they need to care for themselves or their family members safely at home following discharge. It brings me joy to see the transformation the patient has undergone from the time of admission to the time of discharge as a result of quality care. I really enjoy taking care of my fellow veterans and those that have paved the way for me. We have the opportunity to share our experiences that we have had while serving our country. It has been an honor and privilege caring for an original Buffalo Soldier and a Tuskegee Airman. Overall, I absolutely love helping people. Even though some days are more challenging than others, nursing is still my number one passion."

Ms. Necha Matthews joined the 9 Surgical family in the summer of 2010 as a new graduate nurse. An Army Veteran, she displayed dedication, discipline and an eagerness to learn. She sought ways in which she could improve herself as well as the unit. During her tenure Ms. Matthews successfully transitioned from novice to seasoned nurse. She has served on various committees and served as preceptor to nursing students and new graduates alike. Ms. Mathews is committed to personal growth and development. She is currently enrolled at Chamberlain University pursuing her Family Nurse Practitioner degree. Ms. Matthews is a leader who delivers nursing care with skill and compassion. The Veterans she provides care for often call her by name, complementing the service she provides. She demonstrates daily her commitment to the promise of the VA, "to provide care second to none".
The DAISY Award nomination was submitted by a veteran Ms. Matthews cared for. The veteran wrote, "She went about her duties in such a professional manner and without any effort. She went the extra mile to make me feel special all with a smile that made me feel good in a place where that is not the normal. She also responded to my every request in good time. She never forgot anything I asked for. She made my hospital stay a pleasant one. I will never forget her special care during my stay in the hospital.
