Sharron is a nurse's nurse. She leads by example and gets right in there with her staff to care for the patients on her units. As a leader, she does not expect her staff to do anything she herself is not willing to do. Many times, I see her right at the bedside with her nurses helping a family in crisis.
Not long ago I witnessed a particular incident with a family. The family had lost their young daughter to tragedy. The circumstances were incredibly painful. Sharron was there throughout the ordeal of the parents to help them through it in any way possible. When we lose a child one of the staff or child life does a mold of the hands as a keepsake for the parents. The family was involved in the whole process. Sharron called and asked if I had anything to put the molds in for the family. We do have beautiful redwood boxes that are made and donated to us from a group in Green Valley. She asked me to bring several as she wanted this family to have choices because this was going to be a lasting keepsake of their daughter. We went to see them and they chose two of the boxes. One for the parents and one for the grandparents to put their molds in. The mom said to me that Sharron and all our staff had been incredibly supportive of them throughout the month and that they felt as if everyone had become family. She wanted to help in any way she could to make sure that we continue this process for all families dealing with loss.
As a leader, Sharron's staff see the compassion that she shows every day on the 6th floor of Diamond Children's. They know that her door is always open until it needs to be shut. She will always take the time to listen to any of her staff and help them through what they need to find a way through. She is there early and stays late too often because she wants to be able to give her staff all the support they need or to be able to give them a break when she knows they need it.
Leaders, we all have them, but true leaders are people like Sharron that lead by example and show compassion in every action but are professional at all times. Sharron is a deserving and caring nurse.
