She has been recognized as an extraordinary nurse for several reasons that show her compassion, customer service and is a leading example of what it looks like to go above and beyond. Heather consistently demonstrates compassion and customer service every day she is on the unit and no matter how trying our patient population can be.
One patient who unfortunately suffered major injuries as a result of a motorcycle crash recognized Heather during patient rounds. The patient had an open book pelvic fracture with three affected extremities. The patient's anxiety and pain level was the patient's focus and main priority. Heather met this patient by taking care of her and did so with much compassion, empathy, and careful explanation of the patient's plan of care. Heather was able to ease the anxiety and pain level for this patient. By the end of the week and with Heather's care and compassion, the patient had made significant progress in her plan of care. Both the patient and her mom, could not praise Heather enough on the outstanding care she provided. Heather makes these types of connections and provides this type of care to all of her patients. Heather has a way of taking some of the most challenging patients and puts them at ease with her explanation of their plan of care and empathizes with them and their current situation.
One of Heather's most recent recognitions from a patient stated, "I would go as far as saying, Heather is the best nurse I have ever had in my life and if there was a nurse I wanted or needed to be on my case to save my life, Heather would be my number one choice." Heather has a warm and friendly demeanor and a comforting and uplifting presence. Both patients and staff feel and witness her compassion and empathy on a consistent basis.
One of the many examples of Heather going above and beyond for another one of her patients was helping out a patient to find placement for their service dog while the patient was still in need of inpatient care. Again, by doing so, this helped decrease the patient's stress and anxiety with her current medical issues and gave her the time to focus on her acute care needs.
Heather is a role model for others to follow and to aspire to when showing compassion, empathy, patience, and support for our patients that we care for day in and day out.
