On one of the scariest/most exciting days of my life, I arrived at Methodist Hospital, at 3:00 am in labor, four days before my scheduled C-Section. This was my first pregnancy so all I had to go off were other people's stories and whatever I read online. Boy was I scared and massively uncomfortable.
Once I arrived at the labor and delivery area, I was introduced to the woman that would make me feel like the most important person in her charge, Wendy Maslana. Wendy went out of her way to explain everything that needed to occur that morning before it actually occurred. She continued to check on me while waiting for results to come back as to whether I would have the C-section or must return another day. Once the results were in and the C-section rescheduled, I asked Wendy if she or another nurse that I felt close to could hold my hand during the epidural since my husband couldn't be in the room; at most a 20-minute request.
Within minutes Wendy returns saying she is going to be my delivery nurse. Now, this may not sound like a kind thing for a nurse to do but if you take into account that Wendy was off at 7:00 am from a 12-hour shift and my C-section was scheduled for 7:00 am; overall, she stayed an additional 2.5 hours just for me, a stranger.
When we arrived at the OR, Wendy helped me onto the surgery bed, she laid my head on her shoulder and held both of my hands. She continued to soothe me while everyone around us was moving a mile a minute. After they laid me onto the table, I continued to call Wendy's name when I felt scared and she'd come to my side and tell me everything was going great. I should also mention that I suffer from anxiety, and not once did Wendy make me feel like I was overreacting; if anything she made me feel like a warrior.
After my sweet baby boy was born, Wendy proceeded to stay with me in the recovery room, bringing me ice chips, checking and rechecking my comfort levels, and verifying with the other nurse that my husband and son were on their way up to me, so I could see them both and hold my boy for the first time.
Wendy stayed by my side until I was settled in my room; she also visited every day she was scheduled to work, at the beginning and at the end of her shifts. This entire experience will forever be engrained in my heart. Methodist hospital and their entire staff of nurses and doctors that worked with me were patient, kind, caring, and very uplifting. I thank you all for the memory and I especially thank Wendy for her unsung heroism.
