MC is a 44 year old intellectually disabled female who was brought to the ED by her family because they claim she is violent and may harm herself. Her family (sister & brother) left her in the ED and have not returned. She has no personal belongings here at the hospital and walks around the unit in her hospital gown and hospital slippers. She has been here on 3 South for a while and is very sweet and friendly, and has been adopted by the staff. The staff engage her in conversation and walk around the unit with her. She loves to color pictures for everyone. Yesterday after walking around the unit for about the 100th time she started complaining of her feet hurting, and began limping around dramatically. It was an extremely hectic day, with many discharges and admissions. All the nurses were tired and stayed late to chart. In spite of having a very busy day, and getting out late, Lori went shopping after work. She came in today with a brand new pair of tennis shoes for MC who proudly displays the gift from "her friend Lori". MC has happily walked around the unit today without one complaint of her feet hurting! She tells everyone that will listen that her shoes were a gift from her friend. I'm sure Lori looked forward to going home last night and putting her feet up, but she thought of MC first. Lori wasn't even her nurse yesterday or today, but that's just the kind of nurse she is. Always going above and beyond to ensure that the patients get good care.
