Neurosensory Intensive Care Unit Staff Nurse Marissa Matthews, BSN, RN, is the newest recipient of Jefferson’s DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Marissa received the award on May 24 during a surprise visit to the unit at the Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience.

Marissa was nominated by a recent patient’s family member who was very touched by the exceptional care she provided. Marissa’s care made a lasting impression. “I have worked in healthcare for over 20 years and know the importance of customer service to hospitals. I work regularly in ICUs, PCUs, and regular floors in a hospital system that regularly sends patients to your NICU on an emergent basis. Recently, my Aunt was admitted to your NICU due to a massive stroke.

“I wanted to recognize the efforts of one of your staff in taking care of my Aunt during this traumatic time for my family. You have one of the most amazing nurses that any of us have ever seen in your NICU. Many family members of mine have had medical problems that have had them admitted in hospitals up and down the east coast. Never in any of those experiences have we ever met anyone quite like my Aunt’s day nurse for three days, Marissa.

“Marissa went above and beyond her job on a regular basis and she did it effortlessly. Knowing the gravity of the situation, Marissa took care to make sure the members of my family were comfortable at all times. Each time Marissa came in she always asked us about what my Aunt was like. We would tell her stories and she would laugh with us and agree that our Aunt was someone special.

“Throughout the week it was obvious that my Aunt would not improve. When the priest came in to give Last Rites, Marissa stood in the doorway and prayed with us and didn’t leave until the priest left. It made us cry to know that someone that special took care of my Aunt. My Aunt would have loved her.

“I know in my facility it is vital that we know when to recognize our exceptional staff members. I can only hope that the people I work with, myself included can work to become caregivers on the level of Marissa. I cannot thank your staff and facility enough for the care provided to my Aunt and my family prior to her passing.”

Marissa’s DAISY ceremony was able to be attended by this family member. Marissa was recognized by her and the NICU staff and management team for the compassionate care she provided to this patient and the difference she makes here at Jefferson.
