On two occasions I encountered Eric Hindy at Kent Hospital and his effortless professionalism and compassion should not only be commended but rewarded publicly. Most recently, I was visiting a loved one in your ED after her sudden transfer out of a residential facility where she was being treated for substance use disorder. RI being the small state it is, I happened to see Eric Hindy (a former colleague of mine) and instantly felt anxiety about seeing a familiar face and my family's privacy... not that I'd was worried he'd violate HIPAA or PHI, it's just "that feeling" you occasionally get in the state... those of you who are long-term "Rhode Islander's" know what I mean. I hadn't seen or spoke to Eric in 9+ years and as soon as he saw me, he approached me with the utmost kindness and talked with me in a very casual and comfortable way. I decided to share more information as to why I was there and he offered to chat with me about my concerns as he coincidentally (or not) was the nurse overseeing her care. After speaking with me, I asked my loved one if it would be okay for him to say hello with me and she agreed. In the following moments, Eric spent what time he could reassuring us that she was going to be okay, we were in the right place, and she'd receive exceptional care. Eric alleviated our fears and anxiety with his calm demeanor, patience, willingness to educate us in layman's terms, and eventually lightened the mood with a few laughs and cheerful smiles. Having worked in the medical field for 7+ years and having been a caretaker for 14+ years, staff like Eric Hindy are a rare find.
