Music has been a part of one of our patient's life since he was 6 years old when he learned to play the drums. At age 13, he hit the recording studio and had an opportunity to sing alongside rising country stars and Gospel groups. This is what Morgan Johnson learned after she heard singing coming from the room. This patient and his wife had just been transferred from an outside hospital to be evaluated and treated by the physicians on the Pancreatic Biliary Service. On the night of his admission, Morgan learned that he used music to cope with his acute health care crisis. Realizing the importance of music to this patient, Morgan called Arts in Medicine and made arrangements for the piano to be unlocked and available to them. On Tuesday evening for a brief interval, the patient and his wife sang songs and played music, much to the delight of 5 East staff and guests. This brief outing provided them a break from the hospital and strength to proceed with the upcoming weeks' worth of tests. Because of Morgan's insight, this family truly has the benefit of integrated medicine to comfort them.
