A daughter brought her mother to Atlanta for a much-needed respite after taking care of her ill husband for a year. On the second day of the stay in Atlanta, the patient fell sick and was transported to Grady with symptoms of a stroke. The patient had a massive stroke and became unresponsive. She was then intubated and transferred to MICU. The patient's daughter and son were weary so Mrs. Koryan bought them food and began cooking for them and bringing them clothes.
She would also relieve the daughter from the bedside to distract her. Unfortunately, the patient was pronounced brain dead then she was removed from her artificial airway. She soon expired and Bessie was there every step of the way. She grieved alongside the family. It was unfortunate that a planned happy getaway with a vibrant elderly woman turned into an unthinkable experience for the family. Fortunately, Mrs. Koryan was there to offer the family a shoulder to cry on while they stayed at Grady's Medical Intensive Care Unit.
