10K admitted a patient who had been given a critical diagnosis just 4 days after entering the US. Kirsten learned of his admission and that he and his family spoke Malay, a language that our interpreter services wasn't able to provide translation services. Kirsten had lived in Malaysia for 10 years and did not hesitate to go to the patient's room and offer assistance. What a surprise to the patient when Kirsten began speaking to him in his native language! She immediately connected with the patient and family while directly communicating with them.
Over a few days, Kirsten was tremendous support while assisting physicians and other care providers in preparation for transition to a hospice facility. Kirsten went "above and beyond" not only while at work but during off-hours when after OHSU discharge she personally visited the patient and family to provide additional education and support. Kirsten demonstrated remarkable compassion to this patient and his family during an exceptionally stressful and emotional time. We are all proud to work with such an incredibly special co-worker. Thank you, Kirsten!
