An elderly man came to the hospital with cancer. He had to visit the hospital because he needed to have immunosuppressive medication injections regularly. Since he had to visit the hospital quite often, he was well known to every hospital staff.
He normally came to the hospital with a driver and sometimes with his daughter. Everybody knew that he was very kind, gentle and got to know him very well, including me.
One day in the cool season, he came with his old hat. I saw and had an idea to make a new wool hat for him. I finally finished and a new wool hat was given to the patient. He was very happy and showed everyone around what a nurse gave him. He had started to wear this new wool hat for every visit to the hospital.
In the morning on the day that I wished not to happen, his daughter came to me and told that her father's condition was not very good. He was admitted in the ward. She asked me to visit her father and help give intravenous fluid as it could not be given by any nurse.
I rushed to the patient and told that "I am now here with you; I will give you IV fluid" I could gently do it in one attempt. The daughter said that "I think my father would like to find the one that he trusted for help."
On the next day, the daughter came to me and said, "The treating doctor advised we prepare." Not that long, the patient later passed away on that day. I was very sad to hear and visited to pay respect to the body.
The picture in front of me that made me absolutely stunned was the patient lying in red Chinese costume wearing the wool hat that I made. His wife walked towards me and held my hands. She hugged me and whispered without knowing that I made that hat, "Do you know that my husband loves that hat very much? He always wore it when he was sitting at the pavilion by the pond. He would not wear any other hat if someone wanted to give another one to him. He said to me, please put on this wool hat on the day I am gone."
I could not help myself and cried out loud. He really passed away.
