Diane Jane Hilario is a registered nurse working in C2 Surgical Orthopedic and Plastics unit and over several years has proven herself to be an indispensable member of the multidisciplinary team. Diane is a quintessential role model for quality in clinical practice.
Perhaps the first thing that bears mentioning is her compassionate nature. Diane cares for patients from all walks of life, and she works with colleagues of equally diverse backgrounds. Regardless of culture, class or creed, Diane has consistently interacted with genuine respect and empathy towards anyone who requires assistance. Dianne never fails to help her colleagues especially in times of an emergent situation like codes and RRT. Her presence is always there to support her colleagues regardless which module she was assigned. She provides timely nursing support and attends to her patients' needs and familial concerns without hesitation, and in moments where she may be limited in her capacity, she ensures the right help is made available. She goes above and beyond the call of duty for her colleagues, providing doctors with the backing they may need to fulfill their roles. Precepts new staff members to the standards and culture of C2, and is perpetually helpful towards the other nurses in the ward. Diane is in every sense reliable and trustworthy.
Perhaps her most defining virtue is her clinical excellence. To illustrate this, in one incident a patient with a crushed arm injury began to bleed unexpectedly in the hospital gardens, and when nursing staff was made aware, Diane made herself available to take care of the situation. She quickly arrived at the scene and applied techniques to mitigate the bleeding, and escorted the patient to the emergency department. While there, she contacted the right medical personnel and facilitated the arrangements to get the patient promptly into surgery. It was later made known that her swift thinking and actions had inevitably saved that patient's arm.
Diane's expertise has manifested in preventative ways, and her passion and meticulous nature have served her well in screening and auditing patient cares. On one instance, she discovered a patient's anticoagulant therapy was not adequately ceased, and so postponed their surgery and prevented the risk of operative bleeding. On a second occasion, she immediately identified that a patient was prescribed of Tramadol, and noticed that the patient had a known allergy to the drug. After she informed the team, the situation was remedied and the patient was rescued from a potentially grievous adverse reaction.
Her standard of practice trickles down into other aspects of her nursing care. As a charge nurse, Diane allocates workloads fairly to her teammates, and advocates for their causes as needed. She has involved herself in several activities/councils that help to improve the functioning of C2, such as the Unit Based Council, whereby she serves as the Magnet Champion. She attends and disseminates information from the Magnet and Retention Committee meetings. Her focus has been on celebrating the successes of others and showing her appreciation for their help and creating a positive work environment. As a fellow staff nurse, I wholeheartedly appreciate her efforts in doing this. The pleasure of a good day at work simply cannot be overstated, and Dianne has given C2 a wealth of these days.
I believe it is the time that Diane becomes the focus of celebration. Her selflessness and performance in her ward are beyond any single act of gratitude. But I hope that the DAISY Award will begin to let her know just how much she means to her patients, colleagues and the King Faisal Specialist Hospital.
