Vancer was nominated by the wife a patient. She wrote that her husband has Alzheimer's and is not always aware of what is going on and the anesthesia just makes this worse. Vancer was our nurse and he went above and beyond his official duties. He was really there!
He was compassionate and was still able to appreciate the humor in my husband's one line jokes. He was patient beyond belief in my husband's many attempts to urinate to avoid a catheter. When we did get to leave, it was like leaving an old friend.

Vancer is also known to be very family oriented in his personal life and he takes this same approach with our patients and their families. Often patients do feel like they have been talking to an "old friend" after an encounter with Vancer.
