Our nurse, Leia, kept trying to get our pain controlled before discharge. The patient had poor circulation, longer surgery than initially planned, and it was an afternoon procedure. She continued on meeting the patient's needs (and cry out for pain relief) by continuing to check with the doctor multiple times. It was very late in the day and I felt like the unit was ready to shut down, but Leia kept trying to get the patient stabilized with the pain not being relieved.
We as a family were concerned about taking the patient home when there was moaning and groaning. Leia pushed for admittance with the doctor and it ended up being the right call. She even wheeled the patient back herself to initial recovery (PACU) to be in holding there until admittance by a doctor. She didn't leave the patient until she was stable and turned over to a new nurse. She did more than was required.
Words I would use to describe Leia: Kind, Listening, Advocate for the patient, Gentle-natured, sympathetic to the patient, not in a hurry to go home or close down.
