A couple days ago I was walking by triage and noticed a fellow Emergency Department nurse, Ali Ayoub, giving his Nike shoes to a patient we see quite frequently here in our ED. I searched a little into the story and came to realize that this patient had only one shoe and was walking barefoot in the streets. He complained of pain and his foot had obvious injuries from walking on rocks. Ali did not askquestions or offer the yellow socks most of us would. Not to mention he worked for 4 hours afterward with just the yellow hospital socks because obviously he now had no shoes.
Ali, you are not only an incredible nurse and teammate but you're also an inspiring human. It is a pleasure being able to work with truly genuine and compassionate people in this Emergency Department. Although I know you do not like recognition and time and time again have proved yourself compassionate and selfless, this time you deserve it.
I'd like to point out that most of the time past 2:00 a.m. our intoxicated and "frequent flyer" patients are difficult to deal with and care for. For Ali to put judgment aside and get down to the basics of proper courtesy and respect for another human is commendable.
Some nights in this ED can be tough but I always said the staff is what makes this place bearable. Thank you for your hard work and commitment to being the great nurse that you are!
