Sheila is a silent superhero for patients. Over the years she has mentored nurses and every time she stresses that the most important part of the ICU nurse's job is to advocate for the patient. I have witnessed Sheila ask patients, who don't have families and limited means, if she may take soiled clothes home to wash them. She has helped arrange pet care for hospitalized patients who are worried about their pet at home alone. She has made meals for a patient who lived in her neighborhood after they were discharged but still recovering at home. These are just some of the examples that come to mind. Not once has Sheila come to work and announced these good deeds, they have been done silently and with grace. I know about these deeds because I watch and I listen with the goal of being this kind of nurse. Her caring and competence at the bedside are second to none but what makes her extraordinary has always been that she continually cares for patients long after she clocks out of her shift. Ask any nurse how many times they have followed her in caring for a patient and you will easily confirm that she calls on her days off to check on them. As if this grace in caring and patient advocacy isn't enough, it should be noted that Sheila has always helped coworkers in need or during times of celebration. She has organized numerous fundraisers, cooked dozens of meals, given cards and flowers and makes the best holiday potluck meals that bring staff together as a team. Sheila is an extraordinary nurse.
