Recently, we had two family members who both had bariatric surgeries and were admitted to Medical-Surgical. One patient was doing well and was ready for discharge and the other was not progressing as well. The family was here with both patients as they all lived together and were located several hours away from the hospital.
The patients were supposed to stay in a hotel after surgery for a few days to monitor their progress, but due to a scheduling issue, this was not planned. Laura went above and beyond by contacting the bariatric coordinator and case manager to see if there were any discounts on hotels in the area for them to stay or possible funding through the foundation.
Laura also overheard the family discussing how hungry they were as they did not have the money to purchase food, and she reached out to case management who provided meal coupons to the cafeteria for the family. Without much success on discounts for a hotel, Laura offered to
pay for a hotel for the night until both patients could be discharged and could drive home safely. Laura stated, "I can't discharge this patient with no place to go. That's not following our CRISSIE values."
Laura is an asset to the Medical-Surgical team and to Parker as she demonstrates compassion and advocates for her patients as well as provides excellent care every day she is here.
