Debbie McCormack, BSN, RN, CEN, went above and beyond her job duties to make sure a patient had a great experience at UMC. One of the tasks associated with our Service Is Our Passion culture is to participate in discharge phone calls. In the Emergency Center, we call almost 200 people each day. Debbie is one of those nurses that wants to make a difference and does a great job listening to her patients during these calls.
Debbie learned that a woman and her infant child were involved in and accident and brought to the EC. They were kept together, but the mother's injuries were unknown and she was immobilized as was the baby in the car seat. The woman was unhappy being unable to hold and console her crying infant. After treatment, she was discharged home on crutches. While Debbie was speaking with her during her discharge phone call she found out that the patient regretted not having a wheelchair so she would be able to more easily care for her child. Debbie took ownership of the request and apologized sincerely. She sought out an EC physician and had a motorized wheelchair ordered and waiting for the mother to pick up.
This is just one example of how Debbie goes above and beyond for her patients and their families every day. She is a shining example of ownership and UMC's "Service is Our Passion" culture. We are proud to honor Debbie McCormack, BSN, RN, CEN as our DAISY Award Honoree.
