Through her loving devotion and compassion, Carla has been a great asset to her patients, peers, and community for leading efforts in addiction recovery and the implementation of Narcan use.
She exemplifies the true essence of a role model. What began as her mission to help those in her life who struggle with addiction, manifested into working with an entire community to overcome addiction and breakdown the barriers to recovery. She has taken a dark and difficult time in her personal life and created a means to help others. Her efforts have assisted in lessening the stigma associated with drug use, provide additional resources that aid in recovery efforts, implementing hospital-wide policies for overdose cases, and aiding local officials by providing education for moving our community to a more compassionate and caring environment.
She has been able to gain the trust of patients and community members who struggle with addiction. Their trust in her has been gained through the respect, compassion, professionalism, and the personal connection she possesses. Carla has an extremely active role in The Alley and CARES clinic, to provide resources such as Narcan, harm reduction education, mental health screenings, and sexually transmitted disease screening including HIV and Hepatitis C at no cost.
Not only has she worked to provide Narcan to her community, but she has worked tirelessly to provide and train employees of Schneck Medical Center on its use. She has adjusted her work schedule to come in early, stay late, and even some nights to mentor any staff members who desire to carry the opioid reversal medication. Her accessibility, availability, and responsiveness truly demonstrate her mission to serve every patient, family, employee, and community member who has been affected by drug use.
I think she promotes the image of nursing within Schneck Medical Center, the community, and the medical field. She was able to take personal hardship within her family and make it her mission. Carla's mission has become her greatest passion in life and each day, she comes to work getting to embody her mission. I think being able to live out your mission through your everyday work is something everyone aspires to do. I am proud to say that I know and work with her.
