While in Intensive Care for a week, I was lucky enough to have the best nurse three of those days - Shannon. There are many words that could be used to spell out her great attributes: caring, helpful, compassionate, etc. What makes Shannon so special is that she not only dealt with the medical issues I was facing but was also worried about my personal situation. Shannon became my nurse on day 4. Being in a hospital is stressful, so I can't tell you how it felt when she said, "I am going to give you a bath. Would you like your hair washed?" You would have thought she asked me if I wanted a complete makeover! Part of healing and getting better is not only the physical part but the mental part. Shannon made me feel she cared about the whole me. Also, many times she helped us interpret what the doctors were telling us. She helped navigate some of the terminology. When the doctor stated that I was in an "edema situation", she explained afterwards that was fluid retention. What a relief.
