Crystal developed a nurturing and professional relationship with a patient's wife to help her work through her emotions as her husband was passing. The patient was in his 90s and had come to the point where a decision had to be made to continue aggressive treatment, or start to make him comfortable. Through many difficult family dynamics, Crystal took the time to look beyond initial reactions and dive into how the family was truly feeling. The wife really trusted Crystal and eventually, the entire medical team was able to come together to heal the patient and family.
The patient was in the hospital on his wife's birthday and she told Crystal that every year they were married, he would give her two cards--one funny and one sweet. Crystal took it upon herself to buy two cards for her this year since her husband was unable. She even helped him sign the card and had all the staff sign the other. The wife was brought to tears and was so appreciative! Crystal went above and beyond to truly provide holistic care for the patient and his family.
