Some view nursing as a job, others as a privilege. We open our doors to serve those in need. People not only bring their medical needs, they bring their own opinions and values and internet knowledge.

Every so often we get patients that have "crazy" birth plans. In this instance, we had a highly educated couple (PhD) in their late 30s here to have their first baby. They had researched and found all the reasons NOT to vaccinate their newborn. Most that heard of the couple's request disagreed with the plan and dismissed the new parents as ridiculous and irresponsible.

Along comes Beth Lawson, thank GOD!

Beth took the baby and bathed him and talked to the parents about their choices. She spent time discussing and reviewing the benefits of vaccination. She took the time to build a trusting relationship. She respected their decisions. Beth respectfully challenged them and most importantly, she shared her 40+ years of experience and knowledge. She used all of her nursing skills to provide a service and in the end, the parents agreed to all medication and vaccinations for their baby.

Beth retired a few years ago but still works a few days a month, because "she loves the babies." Being a nurse is not just a job, it is who she is. She has set at standard of excellence and for all those that come after her should aim to match. She proved in this one instance that respect, caring, listening, non-judgmental care and sharing one's wisdom and knowledge can impact not just one person but an entire community.
