...My husband and I gave birth to our first baby, a little baby girl, this past Saturday at your hospital. We were admitted on 2/12/14 due to high blood pressure and waited it out until I was finally 37 weeks and it was safe enough to have our baby.
My doctor along with another from Maternal Fetal Medicine decided that the safest way to have our little girl would be via c-section. This decision was finalized just hours before the surgery was to happen and I was terrified. The shift change of nurses was just happening and in walked our new nurse, Hannah. Hannah is my main purpose for writing. She couldn't have made me more comfortable from the second she walked in.
Hannah was very real with me regarding what was about to happen and guided me through every single step of the process. She never made me feel like she was rushing or like I was a number to her- I was truly her patient. Hannah never sugar coated anything either. She told me the liquid I was going to drink to neutralize my stomach was going to be nasty and it sure was. She told me the numbing agent used before my spinal would be the worst part and it sure was. She assured us not to worry and that we were in great hands. I was teary, emotional and just so nervous for the major procedure I was about to undergo and the second she told us that she was going to be with us until recovery, I felt so much better.
From there, Hannah guided my husband through his role, what to expect and where to go- she brought us to the operating room and just like she said- she never left. I could see her counting towels, forceps, checking on me...it was great to look up and still see her there. Once in recovery, she took a picture of my husband and me with our baby for us...kept making sure I was comfortable..amazing bedside manner. I'm sure this is what you expect of all your nurses, but I feel it's important that you know Hannah pulled through- big time.
Once I was in my room, my blood pressure started to increase again significantly and I needed to go back to labor and delivery to receive an IV treatment and be monitored on the cardiac machine. Much to my surprise, who reappeared in my room...Hannah. Again, same thing- she told me the ins and outs of the medicine, what to expect if it didn't work and calmed my nerves right away. I actually fell asleep while she was hooking me up because I was so sure I was in good hands. Before Hannah left that night, she again came back to make sure I was ok, told me she had been in several times to check on me while I slept, let me know who was taking over and wish me well. Just incredible- I felt like I had known her forever- so personable and kind.
We saw Hannah when we finally were able to go home on Tuesday and she right away recognized us, asked how we were, wished us well- it was genuine and I could just tell that's who Hannah is- a good person and a fantastic nurse.
Being at St. Peter's for a week in total and seeing countless nurses and techs, I can tell you with certainty that Hannah is one of a kind. We won't ever forget the experience she provided us with to help us welcome our baby girl into the world. We want you to know how amazing she truly is.
Thanks for everything!
