Deb spends so much time being with her patients and families, which clearly makes a difference in the patient and family experience. Deb had a patient in her 60's that was beaten and raped by two men who broke into her home. Deb was the first nurse to take care of her, make her comfortable, and console her. Deb checked in on her every time she worked even if she was not her nurse that day. After weeks of hospitalization, unfortunately, the patient died. The day the patient coded she would open her eyes and look at Deb, and each time Deb would hold her hand and tell her "stay with me". Deb attended the memorial services and came back from it with a note that read "things to do today: meet someone new, learn a new trick, and make someone smile".
Deb recently had another patient who was pleasantly confused. Her 80-year-old husband came to visit her from Santa Maria Terrace. It was getting dark and the husband was getting ready to leave to walk to Santa Maria Terrace. Deb decided to drive him instead of having him walk there alone. He told everyone how appreciative he was of Deb's kindness.
Deb likes to teach and has had many nursing students. One of her students had a mother on hospice, and during her shift got a phone call informing her that her mom was passing. Deb advocated for the student to be sent home to be with her loved one; the student started to cry and Deb was able to comfort her at the moment. Deb is like a mother to all of us on the unit as well as a great advocate for the patients.
Deb has the biggest heart and the definition of what a DAISY Nurse is.
