Martha, a 5 East nurse, always goes above and beyond for not only her assigned patients but all patients she encounters. A perfect example of this involves two patients who have both been on our unit for an extended period of time awaiting placements to outside facilities. Both patients are considered "adults", but have medical conditions causing mental delays and aggressive episodes that make them difficult to care for at times. Martha, who was not even their primary nurse, was concerned they wouldn't have access to developmentally appropriate toys when they got to their new homes. She took the time to email everyone on our unit about her plans to collect/buy toys for these patients in case anyone else wanted to contribute and included a list of the specific types of toys she knew they liked best. The day before one of the patients was set to be discharged, Martha brought a huge plastic bin filled with toys and clothes for him, most of which she had bought herself. She even thought to include extra batteries and a kit of screwdrivers for the light up/sound making toys. This is just one of the many reasons why Martha is a DAISY Nurse. She always goes the extra mile for patients and families, often thinking ahead to what could make them more comfortable after they leave.
