Johanna Marto, in her three decades of dedicated service to Holy Name Medical Center, has proved to be an inspiration to all, through her steadfast commitment to compassionate care, consistent with the mission of our hospital. In her role as Nurse manager of 5 Chadwick, Johanna continually demonstrates the values that embody the vision of exemplary practice. The demands of a nurse leader are immense, going far beyond the realm of a nine-to-five job, and yet Johanna always makes herself openly available and accessible to all members of her staff. She provides a voice of encouragement in times of stress and despair and is the first one to celebrate and build upon achievements.
Johanna's is resolute in her quest for professional development for herself and her staff - she is the consummate role model in this regard, and in a matter of weeks, will add MSN to her credentials. Leading by example, in pursuing her Master's, Johanna provides support and encouragement to all of us to attain relevant certifications and further education, in order to advance professionally. She even goes so far as to offer her office as a quiet space to study if the home environment is not always conducive to such! Never one to put her own needs first, she constantly provides encouragement to her nurses to pursue their individual professional ambitions, even should this mean losing that nurse to a different department.
Johanna's genuine concern for all her employees goes much farther than the work on 5 Chadwick. When illness strikes any of her staff or their families, she is there to reassure them as they rush home by car or even by plane, that family takes precedence, and provides a comforting presence as she makes sure that everyone's needs are met. She has even attended doctor appointments with nervous staff members when health concerns have them frightened, making difficult times all the more tolerable. Not only does she provide this level of support to her staff, but she also does it for others throughout the hospital, and for the families of our patients. It is not unusual to find family members in her office as she provides them with the emotional support that helps them to cope with the health crisis of their loved one.
We thank her for her continued commitment to us, our patients and to HNMC. We congratulate her as she reaches the completion of her Master's Degree in Nursing, and we look forward to navigating our way together through the challenges of health care under her remarkable leadership.
