My husband passed away from AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia). Because of this diagnosis and treatment, he spent a great deal of time on Powell 3. One of his longer visits was over the Thanksgiving holiday and into the second week of December. During this time, the patients and staff were treated to a wonderful Christmas concert coordinated by one of the nurses, Natasha Krier. It was a delightful evening and my husband enjoyed it immensely. As a matter of fact, he mentioned it many, many times to staff, family and friends. The day before my husband died, Natasha came and asked us if it would be okay if her cello instructor and a violinist would come to his room and do a private concert for my husband. Of course, both of us answered yes! That afternoon for approximately 20 minutes, our family and as many staff and patients that could fit into his room and in the hallway outside were treated to the most beautiful concert that I will ever attend. He was so peaceful that afternoon and clapped after each piece and then thanked the performers when they were done. I asked Natasha if I could submit an article for the Weekend Update and she responded that is was fine with her, that it was special for her as well and she was so glad that it helped him. She also stated that "we love it when we can do special things for our patients and families. It's not just about nursing tasks and never just a job. We live to help people". I know that I will never be able to thank her enough for the joy she gave to him in his final days.
