There are many ways in which people forget to consider the needs of a deaf patient or a deaf family member. I worked with CJ with a deaf patient and, as a learning interpreter of ASL, I have seen ways in which the deaf community has been oppressed and pushed aside. CJ was very eager to learn the proper ways to communicate with the deaf family member of this patient, as well as take time to try and connect with the patient themselves through some basic signs. Many times, we forget about what it means to connect with a person, and I saw CJ take the time out of her day to connect with someone that is usually forgotten about when it comes to means of communication. There is a difference between a nurse that comes to work to work, and a nurse who comes to work to be an inspiration. CJ deserved this award simply for the kindness she showed this patient and family member. Great nurse!
