I nominate Stacey Humphrey for a DAISY award because of her extraordinary compassion that is felt by patients, family and co-workers alike. Stacey always starts her day with a big smile, open heart, positive attitude and cheerful manner. Even in the most stressful situation Stacey manages to maintain her composure while supporting and decreasing stress for her fellow co-workers.

Stacey is able to take on challenging patient assignments that require her dealing with psychosocial aspects and she handles them with grace and understanding. A patient has been hospitalized for over 6 months with frequent re-admissions to the Intensive Care Unit. The patient and family consume a large amount of attention, constant support and frequent education regarding the plan of care. The family's definition of care does not always correlate with the healthcare team plan. This has caused a significant amount of conflict for all. Stacey has been able to navigate the situation and make the family feel comfortable and supported so much so that they have gone to management and requested her as their nurse whenever possible. Stacey takes the time to listen to the wife, and acknowledge her concerns. She then addresses them one by one, making her feel heard. Stacey shows the wife compassion for both the patient's health and her well-being. Stacey shows respect by listening to them, validating their issues and following up with them so the wife has a voice. Stacey also demonstrates teamwork by utilizing all of her resources to meet the needs of the patient and his wife. Stacey takes the time to do range-of-motion with him and when the wife comes in Stacey has her assist with a complete bath and multiple dressing changes that require almost two hours of her time. This allows the wife to feel involved with his care.

At times being a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit can be heartbreaking, stressful, demanding and exhausting. On those days where everything that could go wrong goes wrong and you don't know how you are going to make it through the day, those are the days I feel grateful and blessed that Stacey Humphrey is my co-worker. My day is instantly brighter when I know I am working with her and I could not think of a more deserving recipient for this award.
