I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June, underwent a bilateral mastectomy and DIEP flap procedure in September. Complications from the surgery brought me to Mercy Hospital St. Louis. My morale was at an all-time low, still reeling from the diagnosis, surgery and now another hospitalization. I was admitted through the ER at 2 AM, put on antibiotics and was fortunate enough to be placed on the Oncology floor where I met Chad Mancuso as my nurse.
Early on my first day in the room, Chad introduced himself as my nurse for the day and answered all my questions to the best of his ability with the information he had. It was very apparent to me that he wanted to make sure my questions were answered, and I was comfortable with asking him questions, that I knew he was there for me. Over the course of the next seven days, Chad took the time to make a personal connection, getting to know both my husband and me. I know the importance of clinical expertise, an area in which Chad also excelled, however the compassionate side of Chad was as important to my well-being and healing as the medical needs I required.
While in my room, Chad would always go about the tasks at hand, carefully and efficiently completing them, but would include conversation as he worked. He would stop by the room frequently just to make sure I was okay and if I needed anything. My husband and I got to know him, and he got to know us. It's very easy to become overwhelmed with the workload as a nurse, easy to focus on getting the job done instead of getting to know the patient and being able to read his/her needs. Chad would always say that he was there to make my stay more comfortable.
Part of my stay included a visit from Wound Care. I was very anxious when Wound Care instructed Chad on the specifics of changing my dressings. This was before I got to know Chad and his commitment to excellence! I still remember the first time Chad changed the dressings on three wound areas. He knew I was apprehensive. He calmly reassured me that he was fully capable of completing the task.
Chad Mancuso is an excellent nurse! His career choice is a perfect fit for his compassionate personality, excellent clinical abilities, and a commitment to the health and well-being of his patients.
I thank Chad, for all his help and support during my stay at Mercy hospital. I can without hesitation say that every day that he was charted to be my nurse, my spirits were lifted, and I more positively greeted the new day! God bless Chad and all the patients within his care.
