Karen is the best and she works with her heart. She did every possible thing to comfort my mom.
Dedicated. Patient. Thorough. Respectful. Compassionate. These are descriptions patients, physicians, and other caregivers freely use when talking about Karen. Her 4N-Step Down Unit team members say she is positive and always willing to help them. Known as a great team player, she willingly takes on challenging assignments. "Karen never fails to go above and beyond for her patients or coworkers, and it does not go unnoticed," says one caregiver. It also does not go unnoticed by patients and their family members. "Karen is the best and she works with her heart," reads an applause from one patient's daughter. "She did every possible thing to comfort my mom." With her comforting and respectful bedside manner, Karen can speak with and listen to patients whose native tongues are English, Mandarin, or Cantonese. She is also an excellent communicator with other departments. As a relief coordinator, Karen strives to accommodate bed requests and transfers in a timely manner. When it comes to new hires, fellows, or graduates, she is a pillar as her unit's preceptor, patiently and thoroughly explaining the most complex situations so that her preceptees understand the concepts. That attribute carries over to 4N-SDU, where Karen's peers consider her a go-to resource. She is always striving to improve patient outcomes and seek opportunities to incorporate evidence-based practices to the SDU. When unit staffing needs increased due to increased COVID-19 volumes, Karen volunteered to cross-train in the Critical-Care Unit. She serves as the SDU's Neuro Champion and, before the global pandemic, she attended resource meetings as a National Institutes of Health validator. "We are so proud to have Karen call 4N-SDU her home," sums up one of her colleagues, "and she definitely presents St. Jude values every shift she works."
