Through our diverse background and various areas of expertise, this team rose to the occasion and made a timely decision ensuring all necessary disciplines were present to provide the best outcome.

There was a patient admitted from the ED for worsening shortness of breath and dizziness. This patient was COVID+. This case was different, she was pregnant with twins. The patient was admitted into the MICU. From the first day of admission, the FBC nurses checked on the patient, babies, and MICU staff. They provided real-time education on what to watch for and answered questions. They ensured each shift the MICU nurses had the tools they needed to care for this pregnant mom. The family was assured the entire FBC and NICU team was a phone call away and would be there to collaborate throughout the entire process.
In a blink of an eye, a MICU patient room and hall were transformed into an OR. The Chaplain paused and prayed that God would guide our hand. From the first incision to delivery of baby one and baby two, completing surgery on mom, and stabilizing the twins, the atmosphere stayed calm. Communication was seamless and the twins were effortlessly transferred to the NICU, where they are thriving.
Through our diverse background and various areas of expertise, this team rose to the occasion and made a timely decision ensuring all necessary disciplines were present to provide the best outcome. You would have never known this was the first delivery in the MICU.
When it was determined the babies would have to be delivered, a time out was done by the ICU intensivist for the team to plan, gather information, and ensure we were ready for each scenario. All team members were present in the MICU for the bedside surgery and prepared for unexpected outcomes.
In the end, we could not save the mom, but this team was able to come together to give this family a precious memory of their loved one. A beautiful hand mold was made by some of the team members and was given to the grandmother. It cannot take her place but can assist in the healing process.
