Dr. Gettis will work above and beyond to ensure that our nurses are successful, that they are equipped with the current evidence to practice safety and provide quality care.
Although this nurse is not a bedside nurse, she has profoundly impacted care at the bedside with all her amazing work. She is an expert in evidence-based practice. She was one of the first 15 nurses in the country to sit for and pass the EBP certification offered by ANCC. She has taken this knowledge and expertise and continues to "give back" to the staff. This nurse works tirelessly with each person she meets with to educate encourage and support the bedside nurse as he/she works through the evidence and applies it to practice. This nurse will work above and beyond to ensure that our nurses are successful, that they are equipped with the current evidence to practice safety and provide quality care. Most importantly she is passionate about teaching and emphasizing the need to practice with evidence so that the care we give is beneficial toward positive outcomes for the children we serve. This nurse single-handedly worked on over 40 EBP projects with nurses last year as an advisor, mentor, and support. She is highly respected and valued by every nurse she meets. She is always cheerful and positive, with a kind word for nurses’ families and patients alike. Her "brightness" is contagious, and I have seen nurses and allied health professionals who meet with her walk away feeling positive that he/she can see the project through. Because of who she is, we have seen at Children's incredible work completing by nursing that changed and improved care.

One published project I can point to is the support at Scottish Rite that this nurse provided to the PICU as they looked at the evidence to create the process for an Honor Walk. They then moved forward to publish their work, with this nurse’s help, in Critical Care. Additionally, she is passionate about continuing education for nursing and at any time may be supporting 8 or more DNP students, many who are our employees, on their projects. She has met with countless staff to provide mentorship on jobs, careers, and future education. This nurse is an unsung hero in our system. She has indirectly, with her work as a Nurse Scientist, improved the care of the lives of many children as she has supported the bedside nurse who works to make the art and science of nursing better. Because of all her work, we are also well prepared for Magnet re-designation! This nurse is truly an example of all that the DAISY Award encompasses. Dr. Margaret Gettis is a true DAISY Nurse.
