Over the years, Pauline has been instrumental in the ability to host a holiday luncheon for our volunteers in Ambulatory Surgery.
Pauline McCarthy has been a registered nurse for 45 years. During that time, she has spent the last 21 years with SSM. She consistently demonstrates the mission of SSM through her work. Pauline is a role model for compassion and respect. She is kind to her patients, being present and listening to their fears and concerns. She sees the patient as a whole and never misses the opportunity to give support to the patient’s family as well.

Over the past year, as I rounded on the surgical inpatient unit, I received multiple compliments about Pauline. One family member mentioned that Pauline put her hand on their shoulder as they wheeled their loved one back to surgery and said to them, “We got this, we will take great care of your wife.” That meant the world to this family member and gave them a sense of peace as their spouse was wheeled into the operating room. Pauline has always supported her coworkers, her manager, and the volunteers in a way that showed sincere care and concern.

Over the years, Pauline has been instrumental in the ability to host a holiday luncheon for our volunteers in Ambulatory Surgery. Pauline assisted with decorating, food set-up, invitations, and the organization of the event. Pauline also supports her coworkers. Ambulatory Surgery has a “kitty” that Pauline organizes that is used whenever a coworker has an event, such as a death of a family member. Pauline collects the money and makes sure she gets a personal remembrance gift from the department for these difficult times.

Pauline was the recipient of the Mission in Motion Award in 2011. Since then, Pauline has not been publicly recognized for her unfailing demonstration of compassion for her patients. She will probably be retiring in the next year and I could not think of a better way for her to be recognized for the care and continuous presence she demonstrates in her work.
