Doris has taken on a new role as a preceptor and has become our nurse preceptor extraordinaire.
I have worked alongside Doris for years. Doris has a calm and quiet demeanor that is contagious and reassuring at the same time. When we used to share the same nurses station, I knew Doris had my back. She would help me with my sickest patient or just by starting an IV. Starting an IV is just one skill out of the many outstanding traits and skills she possesses that she is always willing to share to help her co-workers and our patients.

In the last few years, Doris has taken on a new role as a preceptor and has become our nurse preceptor extraordinaire. She has precepted new nurse after a new nurse (the list is very long) and in the process has greatly impacted our unit culture, the hospital, and our patients from the many nurses she has patiently and competently trained. Every single nurse trained by Doris practices with the same amount of attention to detail, maintaining a patient and family-centered focus, and above all compassion that cannot be taught in nursing school. The only area of concern is that they all eat lunch late, just like Doris, because their patients always come first. Our unit is a launching pad for new graduate nurses on their journey to becoming the best Emory nurse they can be. We are so blessed to have Doris precept and mentor so many of them. There is only one Doris, and she cannot be replicated but this is the closest thing. Thank you, Doris, for being a great nurse and for helping shape the next generation of nurses!
