Anthony is the ideal nurse who recognizes a patient’s disability and works with them to ensure the best patient care possible.
There are a handful of nurses like Anthony who can provide the best quality of care to the patient and the patient’s family. My brother was admitted to RUHS ER after experiencing his first breakthrough seizure in 10 years. My brother has low-functioning autism which greatly affects how he responds and verbalizes to any pain and comfort. As his brother, I had fears of going into the hospital wondering if he’d be truly taken care of given his disability.
Despite my fears, we were privileged to have Anthony as our nurse. Anthony is the exemplary definition of what a stellar nurse looks like. My family and I spent a total of 9 hours in the hospital waiting for a CAT SCAN and its results, waiting for attending Physician check-ins, an ICU bed, and responding to my brother’s own moments of fear. In those 9 hours, Anthony took care of us. He continuously reassured us that my brother was in great hands.
Despite the physical altercations, Anthony took in the moments of disorder, not once did he ever complain. He was adamant about always checking my brother’s oxygen saturation levels, re-fastening his seizure pads, managing his IV medications, and always communicating with my family for every interaction. He always listened to our concerns and came to mutual consensuses with my family on how to best approach my brother’s care.
