I am writing this letter to inform you that RN April Loach recently rendered one of the most unselfish and caring acts of service to one of our patients that I have witnessed in the past 22 years I have worked here. A trauma patient came in around midnight after being attacked by an assailant wielding an axe. Her physical wounds were fortunately not life-threatening, but it was later determined that she had also suffered an alleged sexual assault. We had no SANE-trained staff on duty at that time. As you know, evidence must be obtained very carefully in order to bring one of these cases to trial and ultimately secure a conviction, and time was of the essence in order to obtain this evidence. Despite having already worked a 12-hour shift from 0700-1900 that day, RN April Loach got out of bed and came back to the emergency department and took care of this patient’s needs, which required about 3 hours of work. Her efforts gave this patient the best chance of ultimately obtaining justice, as well as providing crucial emotional support. RN April Loach is to be commended for going well above the call of duty for this patient, and I am proud that she is a member of this department.
